Separated from your team.
GPS, dead.
Safety awaits at the rendezvous point, but to get THERE you must figure out HERE.
Channelized terrain is rugged. Unforgiving. Disorienting. It’s encountered worldwide, formed by plate action and erosion. It steers you--channels you--through its own route whether you are walking on a ridge top, river valley, or along the irregular ground in between. A GPS might not function here, and keeping pace is sometimes not realistic due to switchbacks.
Analysis of core land nav techniques resulted in the creation of a focused guide using practical walk through examples, and serves as a valuable training aid and refresher. With years of experience contained in every page, CTT guides the reader through tools and rigging, conducting a resection, and interpreting terrain.
The art of conducting a resection is becoming as lost as weekend hikers in Nepal. A resection combines use of a compass, practical knowledge of how a cartographer made your map, the relationship between map and compass, and the ability to read terrain contour. To conduct a resection in the field requires many small calculations and applications while dealing with distractions, different metrics, reduced visibility, and possibly nagging doubts.
As a training reference, this book was written for people engaged in Search and Rescue (SAR), military and security operations, those preparing for special selection courses, police and federal authorities, hunters, and travelers who veer from the beaten path. This book strives to be a valuable reference to learn and review vital skills prior to any remote adventure or deployment workup using non-digital or electronic tools.
Channelized Terrain Tactics Basic Navigation Training Dan Johanknecht 9781523271580 Books
Dan Johanknecht has written a highly technical but very reader/user friendly book on land navigation. And this is fitting. He’s an expert in his field, having served in the top tier of the Naval Special Warfare community and then later as a contractor and as a search and rescue (SAR) professional. From military operations in Southwest Asia, to tracking and SAR in the Pacific’s most difficult terrain, and to the expanses of Southeast Asia, Dan’s been there and done that. I’ve witnessed his exceptional capabilities, and his first-rate experience is now captured in this highly utilitarian book. This book focuses on land navigation in channelized terrain, which, he explains, is common to all types of geography. While Johanknecht points out that GPS devices and the like are tremendously helpful in navigation these days, batteries go dead, and iPhones die, which can negate the use of electronics. Then what do you do? You turn to the life-saving compass and land navigational skills, and this book tells you how to apply them using easy-to-read instructions and pictures. Dan begins with short and simple teachings on terrain association and dead reckoning, and he gradually layers in the more sophisticated techniques of updating your map with features you spot so you can improve your navigation accuracy. Johanknecht also provides practical exercises so the reader can test him/herself on their own.
I recommend this book for all field military personnel to use for continuing education. I also recommend it for search and rescueSAR teams, hunters, hikers, rock climbers, Boy Scouts, and anyone who spends time in the wilderness. Moreover, it’s written so well that novices can indeed put it to good use. Bottom line: this book is essential field kit for any outdoorsman/woman or adventurist.

Channelized Terrain Tactics Basic Navigation Training Dan Johanknecht 9781523271580 Books Reviews
Very informative and knowledge based. A must read for any hiker, hunter, or professional rescue person who expects to encounter areas and terrain off the beaten path.
Very concise and most informative. I appreciate the author's thoroughness!
Perfect for any hiker or outdoor enthusiast who wants to get back to basics, and learn how to navigate on land without the use of a GPS. The author breaks it down step-by-step, and uses photos and case studies to illustrate the points. In addition, the author provides recommendations for navigation tools, and where to obtain maps.
Awesome!!!
Dan Johanknect has written this guide that is easy for even beginners to follow! I like how he captures your attention with a story and then pictures to show you which instruments to use. I can't wait to put his knowledge to use!
I am a 12 year veteran of outdoor adventure guiding and I am always trying to further my knowledge in outdoor awareness. I have taken Dan's field course, read his book, and spent many, many hours discussing and practicing terrain and field navigation with him. He is extremely passionate about what he does and he is very thorough as a teacher. Dan is an expert in the field and is very good at teaching a classroom skill and then turning it into a practical, real life scenario. Anyone interested in furthering their training in outdoor awareness should check out Dan's book, watch his videos and, if you can, take one of his courses.
I work internationally and almost always "off the beaten path". Dan brings home what I was taught as a Reconnaissance Marine and I have a true appreciation for new techniques and a refresher of what may have forgotten. Being in a environment where you may not have complete control of where you are or how you got there...this book may save your life.
